Hands-On Learning: Peta’s Work Experience Journey at Cronulla RSL
Cronulla RSL' recently had the pleasure of hosting Peta, a Year 10 student from Our Lady of Mercy College Burraneer, for a five-day work experience program.
In New South Wales, work experience is a compulsory component of the Year 10 curriculum, designed to provide students with practical exposure to the workplace and a deeper understanding of career opportunities. This initiative enables students to gain hands-on experience in industries of interest, develop essential workplace skills, and build confidence in a professional setting.
Working alongside the Club’s Community Project Manager, the collaboration provided Peta was provided with invaluable hands-on experience and offered the Cronulla RSL team fresh perspectives on their community initiatives.
During her time with Cronulla RSL, Peta contributed to several key community projects being delivered and supported by the club. She was involved with researching and developing communication materials, for inititaives such as the Cronulla RSL Podcast, Trees of Hope and other events currently underway and in the future. She was even invovled in the rescue of a pigeon, found injured on the Club’s Deck.
This work experience was mutually beneficial. Peta gained practical skills, while the Cronulla RSL team benefited from her enthusiasm and fresh ideas. Such collaborations underscore the importance of community organisations partnering with local schools to provide students with real-world experiences that enhance their education and personal growth.
Peta said. “Work experience with the RSL allowed me to broaden my skillset in many areas, the community work and fun design projects made the whole experience really enjoyable and gave me a positive insight into the working world”.
Cronulla RSL remains committed to nurturing the next generation through opportunities that promote learning, community engagement, and personal development, working with local schools as part of the Schools Grants Program.
