Schools to receive books thanks to community donations

As ANZAC Day approached in 2024, Cronulla RSL Sub-Branch once again rallied the community's support for their cherished "Books in Lieu of Wreaths" program, an initiative that not only commemorated the solemnity of the day but also benefited local schools.

Originating over 25 years ago, the 'Books in Lieu' program offered members of the public, businesses, and community groups the opportunity to make a donation in lieu of laying wreaths on the Memorial during our service. This initiative not only paid homage to the sacrifices of our servicemen and women but also channeled support towards our local schools.

The results were heartening. A total of 45 vouchers were donated in 2024, surpassing the previous year's contributions of 34 and demonstrating a growing commitment to honoring our veterans and supporting education. These generous donations enabled Cronulla Sub-Branch to raise significant funds for local schools participating in the Cronulla RSL Schools Program.

We are humbled by the outpouring of support from our local community groups. Among the incredible donations, Cronulla Rotary stands out with their generous contribution of 9 vouchers, showing their dedication to both service and education. Wondering Women's donation of 13 vouchers underscores their dedication to making a difference in the lives of our youth.

The Books in Lieu Program will see 45 book vouchers donated to local schools

Through Cronulla Sub-Branch’s partnership with local Cronulla book store ‘The Best Little Bookshop In Town’, each donation qualified for a $35 voucher, redeemable for a book of choice by the recipient school. Once selected, the books bore labels inside, identifying the generous donors behind the gifts. We are grateful for the community's unwavering support and generosity.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of this meaningful initiative. Together, we have made a profound impact on the lives of our future generations, ensuring that the spirit of remembrance and community giving continues to thrive in Cronulla.

Wondering Women raised funds to donate 13 vouchers. Wondering Women is a local community group, which was set up to promote wellness and wellbeing and now has 3,600 members in Sutherland Shire.
