Cronulla Celebrates ANZAC Day with Record Turnout and Fundraising
Last Thursday, Cronulla came alive with heartfelt tributes and community spirit as thousands gathered at our iconic beach to honor ANZAC Day. The event, held against the backdrop of our beloved beach, drew an estimated 15,000 attendees to honour the sacrifices and legacy of our service men & women.
Local students represented their respective schools and marched in unity with our community, to honour the sacrifices of those who served. Woolooware High School offered a poignant Thanksgiving reading on stage. The students, along with many local organisations, paid homage to fallen heroes, by laying wreaths as symbols of enduring gratitude and reverence.
Many of these organisations, participating in Cronulla Sub-Branch’s books in Lieu program, which raised funds funds to purchase books for local schools. https://www.cronullarslcommunity.com.au/booksinlieu
From the solemn moments of the dawn service to the lively atmosphere at the Club throughout the day, the ANZAC spirit was felt in every corner. People shared stories, exchanged memories, and stood together in solidarity to honor those who have served and continue to serve our nation with pride.
A standout feature of the day was the enthusiastic involvement of the Club in fundraising efforts, especially during the traditional game of Two-Up. Contributions poured in from various sources, including the first throw, BBQ sales, and the return & earn initiative, with all proceeds dedicated to supporting AWAMO (Australian War Animal Memorial Organization) and our local veteran working dog, Manic (see below).
The Club are pleased to announce, that thanks to the generous support of our members & guests, over $7,000 was raised.
AWAMO have advised that the funds raised will assist getting two animal ambulances to Ukraine. They will be used to both rescue and help animals directly and to help train year 3 veterinary students at Lviv University, who will operate them in the field, both treating animals and learning skills. The believe the latter is a great way to help long term by training the next generation of vets to help animals in that country.
Funds raised for Manic, will provide assistance to his his family to cover costs associated with his ongoing care.
The overwhelming success of this year's ANZAC Day celebration in Cronulla stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of remembrance, gratitude, and community solidarity. As we reflect on the sacrifices of our ANZACs, let us continue to honor their legacy by supporting initiatives that uplift and empower our veterans.
