Retired Military Dog Manic Nominated for Hardest Working Category in Dog Down Under Competition

Cronulla RSL’s first honourary 4-legged member and retired military working dog, Manic, has been nominated for the prestigious Hardest Working Category in the Dog Down Under Competition. This annual competition celebrates the dedication and heroism of working dogs across Australia, and Manic’s story is one of extraordinary service and resilience.

The Dog Down Under campaign is more than just a competition; it will be showcased in a 5-part TV series hosted by renowned animal advocate Lara Shannon. Airing nationally on Channel 10 starting 7 September 2024, the series promises to share the entertaining and heart-warming stories of the finalists and winners, highlighting the incredible contributions these dogs make to our society.

The Hardest Working Category honours dogs whose roles require them to go above and beyond the call of duty. From hardworking herders and faithful flock guardians to police dogs and four-legged war heroes, this category celebrates canine companions who perform exceptional jobs and assist people in need. Manic, a Belgian Malinois, exemplifies the spirit of this category.

Manic served as combat assault dog, on multiple operations with the Australian Defence Force both domestically and internationally

Manic, now retired as a military working dog, is an ambassador for AWAMO and is leading the way in supporting Military Working Dogs.

Manic’s Story

Manic was surrendered to the pound as a puppy but found his calling when the Australian Defence Force (ADF) purchased him from the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) for $8 at approximately one year old. Trained to be a combat assault dog, Manic was deployed on multiple tours of duty, both internationally and domestically. His work was often classified, but his impact was profound. Manic was among the more than 40 dogs deployed by the ADF, 10 of whom made the ultimate sacrifice, with one still missing in action and presumed deceased.

After retiring in 2021, Manic settled in the Sutherland Shire. His remarkable journey continued when he became the Club’s first four-legged honorary member. This connection led to the discovery of the Australian War Animal Memorial Organization (AWAMO) and the Veteran Assistance Dog Program, which support retired Military Working Dogs.
