Australia Day Long Weekend at Cronulla RSL

As major sponsors of Sutherland Council’s Australia Day Long Weekend, Cronulla RSL was proud to support this year’s theme “Reflect, Respect, Celebrate,” in a series of events that reflected the diverse meanings of this day for our community. Commencing with a Sunset Cultural Ceremony and including major concerts, outdoor cinemas and pool parties at our Leisure Centres, we helped deliver an epic program for our community over four days with activities for everyone to enjoy.

Friday 24 January 2025:

Kicked off the festival with a Katy Perry and Taylor Swift tribute show and screening of Despicable Me 4 at Cronulla Park, under the stars.

Also kicked off the start of our Australia Day Menu for the Long Weekend with options of roasted lamb leg, steak sandwich, surf & turf skewers and sweet treats including milo tarts and fairy bread lamingtons.

Saturday 25 January 2025:

Woronora’s Burnum Burnum Sanctuary hosted a Sunse Cultural Ceremony that has been a special highlight in recent years, providing a unique opportunity to experience a solemn and respectful gathering lead by local Indigenous Elders that focusses on the meaning of Australia Day for First Nations peoples. Mayor Boyd has claimed that it is increasingly drawing stronger crowds as local residents embrace the opportunity to learn more about our local Indigenous culture.

The weekend’s live music was commenced with the Cronulla Vibes Concert with Hollow Coves headlining with their indie folk chilled vibe at Cronulla Beach. The fresh line up of talent continued with Odette, Ryan Leigh & Georgia Zoe, Grace Fuller along with crowd favourites Caravana Sun.

Cronulla RSL also began the competition of our large deck chairs displayed on Cronulla Beach from 3-6pm to take photos and tag @cronullarsl to win a $100 CRSL gift card!

Sunday 26 January 2025:

Australia Day was an unforgettable day packed with Aussie fun, full of laughter, good vibes, and delicious food, even visited by Channel 7!

Crowds were blown away at the concert by the musical talents of Baby Animals, 2024 Australian Idol winner Dylan Wright, the Royal Australian Navy Band, and 2024 Battle of the Bridges winners Beanstalk on an even bigger stage at Cronulla Park. Unfortunately, Australian icon Daryl Braithwaite fell ill, but was replaced by Furnace who had the crowd pumping.

Among other events that were held across Sutherland Shire include screenings of family friendly films at Cronulla and Engadine as part of the ‘Cinema Under the Stars’ series of outdoor film events, as well as the ever-popular pool parties being staged at Council’s Caringbah, Engadine and Sutherland Leisure Centres along with Como Pool.

At Cronulla RSL we also held our annual thong throwing competition, pie eating contest, lamington eating challenge and Australia Day Barbeque Specials sold out on the deck. We also continued our deck chair promotion from 3-6pm for the chance to win a $100 CRSL gift card!

And to conclude a very eventful day, the spectacular 9pm fireworks were displayed over Cronulla beach.

Monday 27 January 2025:

Closed out the weekend with a screening of Migration at Cronulla Park. This free, family-friendly event was the perfect way to wind down after an exciting weekend.
